Downtown is not a neighbourhood of single-family garages, and it would be misleading to pretend otherwise. The doors here are mostly commercial and multi-unit: rolling steel security doors on ground-floor businesses, sectional and rolling loading doors on warehouses and light-industrial buildings, and the gates and roll-ups that serve loft and apartment parking. What they have in common is cycle count. A door that opens forty times a day wears out its springs, drums, bearings and chain in a fraction of the time a home door takes, and when it fails it fails at the worst moment, either locking a building's residents out or leaving a business unable to close up. Older buildings add their own problems: hand-chain hoists that have seized, guides distorted by years of vehicle contact, and openers wired into equally old panels. Older loft conversions also often have wide single-unit roll-ups inside the building for individual parking bays.
