Los Feliz has some of the best-preserved 1920s and 1930s architecture in the city, and with it some of the oldest garage doors still in daily use. On the character streets it is normal to find a detached garage of the same period as the house, with a solid wood door that the owner wants kept rather than swapped for steel. Wood is the recurring theme: it takes on moisture, gains weight, drops out of balance, and eventually the spring that was fitted for it is no longer the right spring. Panels sag at the stiles and the door begins to catch. Up in the hills the difficulty is access and geometry: garages cut into the slope, short steep driveways, low headroom, and openings that are not a standard size. We are happy to preserve and re-hang an original door where it is worth saving, and to say plainly when it is not.
We re-spring and re-balance heavy wood doors to their actual weight, replace cables, rollers, hinges and track, reset off-track doors, and repair or replace openers, including low-headroom and jackshaft units for tight hillside garages. Photo-eye safety sensors are fitted wherever an older system is missing them. Every visit ends with a balance test and a reverse test. Licensed and insured.
