Pasadena's older housing stock creates problems you simply do not see in newer tracts. Many Craftsman and Spanish revival homes have a detached garage at the end of a long driveway, built with low headroom and shallow backroom, so a standard track and spring package does not fit and needs a proper low-clearance setup rather than being forced in. Original wood carriage-style doors are heavy and get heavier as the timber takes on moisture, and because springs are rated in cycles they reach the end of their life faster on that weight than on a light steel door; once tension drops the door is out of balance and the opener is lifting a load it was never rated for.
