Uptown Whittier and the older streets around it still have a great many original wood garage doors on Craftsman and 1920s homes, and most of the ones that fail do so for the same avoidable reason. A wood door needs sealing on all six faces, including the top edge and, above all, the bottom edge that nobody ever paints. Left bare, that bottom edge wicks up water off the driveway, the panel swells, the door binds in the opening and gains enough weight to put the springs out of balance. Once the stiles start delaminating the repair gets expensive. Repainting or resealing every few years, plus a sound bottom seal, keeps a good wood door going for decades and keeps the character of the house intact. Out in East Whittier and Friendly Hills the housing is mostly 1950s to 1970s with steel doors, where the work is more conventional spring, cable and opener replacement.
We re-spring and re-balance heavy wood doors, replace rotted bottom rails and seals, renew cables, rollers, hinges and track, reset off-track doors, and repair or replace openers. On steel doors we do the same work at lower cost and can supply an insulated replacement where a panel is beyond saving. Photo-eye safety sensors are fitted where they are missing.
