Winnetka is solidly 1950s and early 1960s tract housing, street after street of the same plan with an attached garage facing the road. What sets the work apart here is the west-facing exposure and the heat: a garage door in Winnetka takes full afternoon sun through a long inland summer, year after year. Original wood sectional doors absorb that, delaminate at the panel joints and gain weight, which quietly outgrows the spring that was fitted for them. Steel replacement doors fare better but their weatherseals go brittle and the rollers dry out, so the door starts running noisy and rough before anything actually breaks. Heat also cooks opener electronics and remote batteries.
